When a fish is transported from over seas or domestically they go through a process which causes great stress. Add to that, DR. Erik Johnson mentions “whenever a fish is netted and bagged they loose their immunity system for 72 hours!” Their immunity system now in a state of distress makes them vulnerable to diseases such as parasites, bacterial diseases, fluke and others. If by chance your fish picked up a bug along it’s travel you would not want to introduce it to your pond and risk infecting your entire pond.
Another cause of stress is ammonia build up. You can be sure that the longer the koi remains in transport will equate to higher levels of ammonia in the bag Therefore, when you receive your new addition it is important to try to only transport the ‘fish only‘ in to it’s new quarantine area and not the water.
The dreaded KHV...Koi Herpes Virus. It is worse than aids to a koi and is not to be taken lightly. It is highly contagious and carries the possibility of killing every koi in your pond.
Always assume that Koi in quarantine are potentially infectious to your other Koi.
These are not just fish, they will become your pets.
